On December 28, 2024, the Calangute panchayat conducted raids on shops along the beach promenade that were allegedly conducting multiple businesses without proper licenses. These establishments had obtained licenses for specific operations, such as clothing retail, but were found to be running additional ventures like tattoo parlors, cafes, and cashew nut outlets without the necessary permissions. As a result, five such shops were sealed, and unauthorized structures associated with them were dismantled.
In a related action, a shop reportedly belonging to Pernem MLA Pravin Arlekar was sealed by Sarpanch Sequeira for allegedly subleasing it to multiple vendors without authorization.
These measures are part of a broader effort by the Calangute panchayat to address unauthorized commercial activities that disrupt the tourist experience and tarnish the area’s reputation. Sarpanch Sequeira emphasized the importance of maintaining order to ensure that tourists can enjoy the beach promenade without harassment. He also indicated that the panchayat would continue to act against illegal vendors in other areas, including Baga Beach and Titoโs Lane.
Additionally, the Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) conducted a raid targeting unauthorized biryani vendors in the Calangute market. Six vendors operating without the required licenses and under unhygienic conditions were found. The FDA confiscated the food items, stands, and vessels used by these vendors. An FDA officer noted that while previous raids had been conducted, the vendors resumed operations during the tourist season, underscoring the need for ongoing vigilance.
These coordinated efforts by local authorities aim to curb illegal activities and enhance the overall experience for visitors in Calangute.
